The actress best known for her role as Bella Swan in the hit vampire franchise Twilight has opened up in her first most honest and straight talking interview surrounding her personal journey and how she “loves” the idea that she can help someone who maybe struggling with their sexuality or coming out to friends and family.
Kristen who in a recent interview with InStyle magazine spoke about her new role in her upcoming film Happiest Season and how she never used to see herself as a celebrity ambassador for the LGBTQ+ community until she learnt to understand more about her impact as a high profile celebrity it had on others.
“The first time I ever dated a girl, I was immediately asked if I was a lesbian. And it’s like: God I’m 21 years old.” Kristen advised. The 30 year old continued and stated “the added pressure of representing a group of people, of representing queerness wasn’t something I understood when I was younger.”
In her new role Kristen plays the role of Abby, the girlfriend of Harper played by Mackenzie Davis who has yet to inform her family that she is gay. The role for Stewart was something that she has also experienced on both ends of the spectrum advising” been on both sides of the dynamic where someone is having a hard time acknowledging who they are and the other person is more self- accepting” Stewart spoke, and advised that she felt “protective” of both characters in the film because of her empathy from both sides.
When asked candidly if Kristen had ever felt pressure from the LGBTQ+ community Kristen was straight to answer with her clear words “I did feel enormous pressure, but it wasn’t put on me by the LGBTQ+ community but more so by the media and her fans.” However since her coming out Stewart advised that she has come to “relish” her identity as a queer icon and she “loves” the idea that she can help someone who is struggling.
Kristen has been in the spotlight under a magnifying scope for many years, having her life completely turned upside after her fame heightened after the release of the first Twilight mega hit saga and her confirmed romance with her then co- star and partner Robert Pattinson was leaked to the world led to her fame being at a level where she was unable to do just the small things in life without being noticed by fans or the media.
Since her public split and sadden backlash after an affair was caught on camera untimely ended her romance with Pattinson. However Kristen has since been in several long term relationships including Michael Angarano and Soko which openly led to the actress confirming her sexuality.
Finishing her interview with InStyle Kristen advised “I love the idea that anything I do with ease rubs off on somebody who is struggling.”
Her new movie Happiest Season is set to be released on November 27th in the UK.
