An eight week program of scheduled repairs is underway on Brighton’s North St. A central artery for traffic moving across town in between Hove and Kemptown, the closure is expected to disrupt public transport links, diverting buses down to the seafront in between Churchill Square and the Old Steine.
The work is being undertaken by Southern Water, who are administering repairs to an area originally excavated in 2007 for the replacement of around 400 metres of ageing Victorian era water mains.
The scheduled works will include “resurfacing the road from the Clock Tower down to just before the East Street roundabout” as well as work to strengthen large sections of the road that have weakened under use over the last 10 years. In a statement by Southern Water, representatives regretfully acknowledged that previous “reinstatement work dating back nine years has not proved to be as durable as was anticipated on a route which handles thousands of daily vehicle movements, including dozens of buses”.
Temporary traffic restrictions will be in place on North Street during the work, with local diversion routes in operation. Bus services will follow local diversions during the work, with passengers being urged to check with individual bus companies for details.

The working hours of these ongoing repairs are between 8am – 6pm, seven days a week. A statement on the operational hours of the works by Southern Water reads: “We will get the work completed as quickly as we can but as North street is home to residents as well as businesses, we must balance the need for the swift completion with the needs of the local community. We will be starting slightly earlier on the mornings of Monday 18 and Tuesday 19 September in order to safely set out the diversions before peak traffic hours.”
