Halloween night has finally fallen today and the streets of Brighton are set to be filled with trick or treaters donning costumes and travelling from home-to-home. Sussex Police have issued a message to communities to ensure everyone who wishes to can celebrate safely and respectfully of others. It is important to remember some people are intimidated by strangers knocking on their door at nighttime.
Inspector Simon Burroughs said: “We know that around this time of year there will be more people out and about celebrating both Hallowe’en and Bonfire night. We also know that the vast majority of people will enjoy this in a safe and respectful way. However, there are some who will use the opportunity to disrupt their local community.
“We are asking people to be aware of those who are not celebrating in the same way and respect those who feel anxious or intimidated by strangers knocking on their doors. We have posters that residents can display as a clear indication of whether they would like trick or treaters to visit.”
The police have created two different posters for residents to put up in their window to signal to trick or treaters if they are welcome or not. Under the mantra ‘Be polite on Haloween night’, Sussex Police aim to reduce incidents of anti-social behaviour, which they have reported to have fallen this year.
They also issued the following safety tips:
- Young children must be accompanied by an adult.
- Consider calling only at houses where you know the residents.
- Respect the privacy and wishes of people who do not want to take part in trick or treat.
- Residents are also advised to continue to be vigilant when opening the door to strangers or unexpected callers.
Although there are lots of safety and courteous points to consider when trick or treating, it is still possible to have a good time tonight!
