A group of local volunteers have said that they found a “shocking” amount of litter during a two hour clean-up on Brighton’s beaches.
The local litter pickers participated in a clean-up of Brighton and Hove’s beaches as part of the Barefoot Wine Beach Rescue Project.
The tenth annual litter picking event hopes to encourage people to free their beaches of rubbish with the incentive of a glass of wine to look forward to at the end of it all.
More than twenty people came out in support of the cause and were all rewarded with a refreshing glass of Barefoot wine to finish the day off. Spanning over two hours, volunteers were tasked with filling bin bags with rubbish that had been discarded along the coast.
Priding itself on its competitive aspect, the initiative split the volunteers into teams with the winning team being awarded their very own bottle of wine.
The Barefoot Wine Beach Rescue Project is set to continue its clean-up initiative across the UK and throughout the summer, in partnership with environmental charity Surfers Against Sewage.
The marketing director of Barefoot Wine and Bubbly’s European, Olga Senkina has said: “We are very proud to have worked with 6,200 volunteers to collect 13 tonnes of litter from UK beaches over the last nine years.”
She also said she wanted to encourage locals to keep Brighton’s beaches clean: “We are delighted to again encourage the Brighton community to come and help us clean their local beach and make the local area a better place for everyone to enjoy in the process.”
