This week the Brighton Journal team were lucky enough to be invited down to Theatre Royal’s 1950’s themed Summer Party, an exclusive evening where theatre enthusiasts came together to celebrate the amazing history of Brighton’s beautiful Theatre Royal!
Entering through the stage doors, guests were ushered through the fairy lit entrance straight onto stage, looking out on to the four levels of red velvet seating, just as performing actors would.
Greeting guests as they entered the stage was Josh, from Brighton Gin, who was creating gorgeous pomegranate and prosecco cocktails, with a dash of Brighton Gin, of course.
We met Michele and Suzy, who were enjoying Brighton Gin’s delicious cocktails. They told us that they are regular theatre goers, and have been part of Theatre Royal’s theatre group for over 5 years. “We alternate our theatre trips between Brighton and Eastbourne each month!”
We also had a chat with Anne-Marie and Sarah, who had dressed perfectly for the evening’s 1950s theme! Anne-Marie told us of her work on the Social Committee of OneFamily, organising group theatre trips to the Theatre Royal several times a year.
All of the guests were lucky enough to be invited to delve into the dressing up box of dreams, complete with dresses, fur stoles, gloves and more – everything one could need to create the perfect 1950s look.
One couple who certainly didn’t need to borrow clothes to look the part was Ruby and Thomas. Thomas is a suit tailor at Hugo Morris and Ruby is a lingerie seamstress, working for ethical lingerie brand LuvaHuva. Thomas told us that they were invited along to the Summer Party due to his job: “We thought it would be a lovely time, plus we both are very into the fifties – this is normal clothes, this isn’t even dressed up for us!”
Finally, we chatted to Amanda, and her guest Janet, who had both taken full advantage of the amazing outfits on offer for guests to wear in order to get into character for the evening. Amanda runs Bend Fit Mend Studio, and puts on stretch and yoga classes for the members of the theatre groups performing at Theatre Royal. “I come to the theatre, and use one of the gorgeous rooms and debrief the team’s tired bodies and stressed out heads. Putting on the performances and making this place run is hard work!”
