Aside from the Annual Labour Party Conference, The Women’s Conference, and The World Transformed, 3 landmark political events that would have long been causes to circle dates this weekend on the calendars of those politically inclined and active Brightonians, there is plenty on the agenda for this weekend that isn’t geared towards such grand topics as the future of British society. We have chosen a few of our highlights that you can read about below.
Colour Run // Saturday 23 – This much loved event returns to Brighton tomorrow. The 5km run embarks from Madeira Drive at 11.00 and promises to be full of colour and fun. With an all-new Cloud Foam Zone, unicorn mascots and awesome new colours at the classic ‘Colour Zones, this years event is sure to be worth the exertion.
Bring Your Own Beamer (Brighton Digital Festival) // Friday 22 & Saturday 23 – Pop-up Brighton’s night of experimentation and collaboration returns once again for Brighton Digital Festival offering the audience a chance to enter a world of projection. With curated projection based installations, a short film cinema, an area where people can turn up and project indoors and outdoors with a breathtaking backdrop of the West Pier. BYOB Brighton is now in its 6th year and is moving to a new exciting location outside the West Pier. The new arches by the i360 will be hosting the projection based installations. Outside, in between the West Pier’s columns of the Golden Spiral, there will be a short film cinema and the shared screen. This free show is open to everyone, so why not explore a digital wonderland showing off everything a projector can do. From 3D projection mapping to short films to interactive installations.
Artist Thomas Buckley is back again to 3D map on plants. Numan Ahmed will be giving an illusion of a portal. Alexia Lazou is using one of oldest forms of beamers (projectors) by using victorian magic lanterns. Plankton World will be back again but this time letting you explore plankton through VR. MAFF will be giving you the chance to interact with projection based sculpture and Dan Shay will be giving you interactive work on a large scale.
The V.I.B (Very Independent Brighton) Food Tours // Friday 22 & Saturday 23 – Brighton Food Tours’ signature food tour is packed with the eclectic sights and tastes from the unique makers to the unsung heroes of Brighton’s indy food & drink scene. Over the course of approx. 3 hours you’ll get a chocolate-box selection of the best foodie hotspots that quirky, independent Brighton has to offer.
African Fashion: Wikipedia Edit-A-Thon Day // Saturday 24 – “Come in and help us update and edit information and pictures on Wikipedia, to provide more articles and images on African fashion.” As part of the Fashioning Africa project, the event will include a first look at the Museum’s new collection of post 1960’s textiles and garments. Training and guidance will be provided by a Wikipedia staff member, so come along and join in for the day or just pop in and see what is happening.
London to Brighton Off-Road Bike Ride // Saturday 23 – The London to Brighton Off-Road Bike Ride is the UK’s biggest charity off-road ride. Going for 10 years now, the route is varied, you will be faced with a number of different elements of mountain biking including tough climbs, technical descents, rocky surfaces, dirt trails, rough tracks, forest paths and adrenaline pumping single tracks – we’ve got it all! The variation means there’s something on offer for cyclists of all abilities. There’s plenty of technical sections to delight the off-road professional – but at 75 miles, the event also presents an achievable challenge to those new to the sport, especially with the help of our training advice and support.
Ghost Hunt at Old Brighton Police Cells // Saturday 23 – Are you brave enough to take on the Old Brighton Police Cells? Originally built in the Victorian era these cells have been home to many hardcore prisoners.It is now home to many ghosts including a murderer and his victim, a police officer. This terrible crime took place within the prison and visitors have heard whispers, screams, unexplained noises and many more..This event is a real ghost hunt where you will be able to participate in experiments and use equipment as seen on TV. No theatrics are used on this event.
My Dog’s Got No Nose // Saturday 23 – My Dog’s Got No Nose takes us on a journey through the events surrounding a stand-up comedian’s first ever performance. Before picking up his microphone and venturing into the limelight, he regales us with stories, tales about his life and experience; funny, sad, poignant and often laugh-out-loud hilarious. He bares us his soul, unrequited love, animal lovers, facts of life, sibling rivalries and mercy killing are just some of the elements covered in this very funny and bittersweet story, as we discover that both the man and the performance are not quite what they seem. Recommended age 16yrs+ (Stong Adult Themes).
New Road Vintage and Collectors Market // Saturday 23 & Sunday 24 – The atmospheric New Road Vintage & Collectors Market will be bringing back the traditional market vibe to Brighton where you’ll find stalls selling bric-a-brac, interiors, original artworks, furniture, vintage rags and a host of other second-hand treasures.
Royal Pavilion State Garden Greeters // Friday 22, Saturday 23 & Sunday 24 – Volunteer Greeters will be in the Royal Pavilion Gardens giving out information about its buildings and activities including Brighton Museum & Art Gallery, the Royal Pavilion, the Royal Pavilion Garden, the Dome, the Chapel Royal and the Theatre Royal. Each Greeter has information on the history of the buildings and garden along with lots of useful info for visitors, and there is also have a table offering useful leaflets and maps. So swing by Pav gardens this weekend and learn a bit more about our local landmark.
Apple Day // Sunday 24 – Brighton Permaculture Trust host this event at Stanmer Park to celebrate the harvest in style. Thousands of people are expected to attend the free event (which charges £10 for parking) full of activities for all ages. There will be tours of the Stanmer orchards and the Brighton Permaculture Trust plot, a bar serving fresh scrumpy made with apples from the Trust’s scrumping project along with the ever popular Apple Cafe using fruit scrumped from around Brighton & Hove and quality ingredients donated by Infinity Foods, plus music, plenty of food stalls, a fresh juice factory and more!
Student Water-fight // Sunday 24 – Being billed as the “biggest water fight in history”, this years student water fight is sure to make a splash. In an attempt to break the official world record, the free event has prepared over 200,000 water balloons and an arsenal of water-guns. The current world record is held by The Christian Student Fellowship in America with 8,957 Students in Attendance & 175,141 water balloons burst, with organisers claiming that “we have everything in place to go even BIGGER!”. The event will take place at King Road Brighton and opens at 10.00.
Canadian Film Festival // Sunday 24 – The Canadian Film Festival is now in its 4th year, this event is the only film festival in Europe promoting Canadian Anglophone and Francophone cinema. The festival will be relocating to Brighton for two days on Sunday 24 and Monday 25 September, in an aim to strengthen the relationship between Dieppe and Brighton. The festival team, joined by actors, producers and 40 film enthusiasts will arrive in Newhaven at 3pm on Sunday, where they will be greeted by the Mayors of Newhaven and Peacehaven. They will then catch a Big Lemon bus to Brighton for a tour of the city. A selection of short films will be screened at the Dukes at Komedia and a “Brighton Award” will be given to the winning short film on Monday. Two local actors will also be members of the Jury in Dieppe this year: Brighton resident John Locke and Worthing resident Brenock O’Connor, famous for his role in Game of Thrones.
