With fashion becoming more popular on platforms such as YouTube and the recent boom in fashion bloggers and vloggers, it’s only natural that there has been a rise in the amount of people doing fashion degrees and the quantity of fashion designers now available in the UK. With the likes of Vlogger sensation Zoe Sugg (Zoella) living in Brighton and the ever popular Brighton Fashion Week, it’s no wonder that outside of London, Brighton is the place to be for aspiring fashion designers. With that in mind I wanted to find some of Brighton’s top fashion designers and find out what inspires them and their designs.
The first fashion designer I came across in my hunt for Brighton’s best was Elif Kose. What first drew me to this designer was her vast collection of clothes and accessories. Not only does she design beautiful and bespoke wedding dresses, she has a huge range of gorgeous ready to wear items such as; dresses, coats, jackets, trousers and blouses but also designs accessories such as bags and jewellery. Each piece beautifully hand made to perfection and designed to reflect a contemporary lifestyle with elegance.
My second fabulous fashion designer is Sarina Poppy, a bespoke clothing design company that produces handmade garments in the UK.
Sarina’s garments have been seen on both Brighton and London’s catwalks during fashion week and she also has pieces available in small boutiques around the UK. Sarina’s pieces are not the usual types you would find on the high street. They are stunning and elegant, inspiring and creative pieces. Pieces to be worn on special occasions or if you want to stand out in a crowd.

Next designer is Roxy from Brighton Tailoress, an experienced tailor, dressmaker and clothing alterations expert from Brighton. She has a degree in Fashion Design from Northbrook College and gained much of her experience working alongside high end fashion designers such as Giles Deacon in Paris before opening up her own shop in Brighton over three years ago.
fourth fashion designer just had to mention was Melanie Roberts , a Brighton based dressmaker. Melanie has been creating gorgeous dresses for all occasions for almost 20 years and has a vast portfolio of stunning designs. From the classic and timeless to the quirky and inspired, Melanie has designed wedding dresses, evening gowns, prom dresses and occasional wear but also has a large collection of tailored pieces from suits, uniforms, shirts and jackets. She has such an eye for detail and clients that keep coming back year after year.‘A dressmaker, designer and tailor for almost 20 years. I make clothes for all occasions, for any age or size, and am happy to create new designs, or work from your personal designs, patterns or pictures.’
My fifth and final Brighton based fashion designer is the fabulous Louise O’Mahony from L.O.M.
I was immediately taken in by Louise’s bright and vibrant, festival style designs. Her weird and wonderful pieces range from bold bikini’s and pom pom fringed jackets to nude mesh dresses laced in sequins and plastic raincoat capes. All three of her ranges have strong links to the 70’s with their bold and dramatic shapes and colours. Louise’s pieces are definitely more for the outgoing festival type, they aren’t the type of clothes you would wear to meet the Queen lets say! ‘Inspired by travel and adventure, designer Louise O’Mahony creates stand out pieces, made in the UK, with L•O•M prints, that are loved by customers the world over.’
So, these are my top five fashion designers based in Brighton. Some wonderfully wacky and creative and some simple and classic but all beautiful and inspiring in their own way. With fashion only getting bigger and more popular, I can’t wait to see what the next generation of fashion designers can come up with and how they will push the boundaries of fashion design. The last few years in fashion has changed so much, I wonder what we will be wearing in five years from now?!
