Brighton & Hove Albion have tied down Fabian Hürzeler on a new long-term contract, ending months of speculation about a possible return to Germany and giving the club a significant boost as they push for European qualification with three games to play.
The deal that says everything about Brighton’s ambition
The 33-year-old German still had a year to run on his existing contract. Brighton chose not to wait. Sky Sport’s Florian Plettenberg reported on Sunday that the new deal had been agreed, and the formal announcement is expected within days. Bayer Leverkusen had been the most serious of several Bundesliga clubs watching Hürzeler closely. They have now been seen off.
For Brighton, locking down a manager every other club in Europe wants is a meaningful statement. Hürzeler became the youngest permanent head coach in Premier League history when Tony Bloom appointed him in June 2024. He was 31. Two seasons in, he has guided the club to a points total that may yet deliver only the second European campaign in the club’s history.
A run-in that could rewrite the record book
Brighton sit eighth on 50 points, two behind Bournemouth in sixth and with three games left. The mathematics still allow a top-six finish — and depending on how the FA Cup final lands, a sixth-place finish could mean a Champions League spot. The defeat at St James’ Park last Saturday made the climb harder, but the fixture list helps: Wolves at home, Leeds away, Manchester United at the Amex.
Hürzeler told Sky Sports last month he was “totally committed” to the project at the Amex and dismissed the Leverkusen speculation. The new contract turns those words into ink. For a manager linked with Chelsea earlier in the season and now Bayer Leverkusen, the decision to sign on for the long term reflects a settled belief that Brighton’s European ambition is more than a one-season story.
The next test arrives at the Amex on Saturday against Wolves. Hürzeler will be in the dugout, and now — for the first time this season — there is no doubt he will be there next year, the year after, and longer.
