Plastic has become a priority topic between climate change activists and ordinary people for the past few years. The reduction of plastic use is in demand everywhere and the rise of petitions and protests are the result of it.
Action Network have launched a petition demanding that events in Brighton and Hove to be plastic free. The petition has reached 3,815 signatures and it is on a mission to make a change in the city of Brighton and Hove.

The ‘undersigned’ are calling on Brighton & Hove City Council and the organisers and sponsors of the city’s big events ‘to commit to eliminating the use of single-use plastics by 2020’. The core issue is the pollution and damage that plastic can cause to the ocean and the environment. Approximately 8 million tonnes of plastic end up in the ocean worldwide. Plastic in the ocean can be a danger to sea-life and can easily find itself on the beach in Brighton.

According to the UN Environment, one million plastic bottles are purchased every minute. Single use plastic bags are also to blame for the amount of plastic that finds its way in the ocean. The production of plastic has been increasing since the 1950’s and it is now at 300 million tonnes a year. The Action network petition website is suggesting the reduction of plastic in Brighton & Hove by replacing plastic bottles and cups with stack cups and water refill stations.

‘Now we need action on this progress and to ensure that the future events in our city are plastic free: no ifs, no buts. By 2020 no major public event should be given permission, funding or sponsorship if they are using single-use plastics’
-The Action Network
Protecting the environment is essential to ensure the future of generations to come and the future of this planet. This petition is a step in the right direction and an opportunity to make better decisions that benefit the environment and the population.
