The public have had their say on the third phase of the Valley Gardens project with the council receiving 875 responses.

This third phase aims to improve travel into the city centre by developing the area from the Old Steine to the Palace Pier roundabout on the seafront. To achieve this, the council plan to simplify the road layout, improve lighting and landscaping and bus and cycle infrastructure.

Chair of the Committee, Councillor Gill Mitchell acknowledged the significance this third phase will have on the public, stating: “This area is one of the main gateways into the city and we will also be looking at what can be done to make transport routes simpler and more accessible for visitors.”

In June the initial objectives for Phase 3 were approved by the Environment, Transport and Sustainability Committee and were put forward to the public to gather their opinions from 21 May to 29 June.

With over 85% of respondents living in the city and 19.5% working in the area, Mitchell highlighted the importance of this public discussion expressing that: “Public consultations give us a real insight into what is important to people who live and work in the city and I’d like to thank all those who took part in this consultation.”

The high level of responses revealed that this area is used primarily for people to travel between places and that  difficulties in crossing the road and traffic congestion were seen as the greatest issues for people. More specifically drivers saw the need for improved road conditions and better managed traffic flow, pedestrians wanted more direct walking routes and safer crossing points, and cyclists more cycle lanes and improved safety.

Mitchell added, “Ultimately, we want to improve connectivity to the city centre, simplify the road layout in that area so that it benefits all transport users, and make the surrounding landscape areas attractive and safe spaces to spend time in.”

The council’s transport planning team will now take these consultation responses into account and begin designing improvements for the third phase of the Valley Gardens project. This will then be brought before the Committee in October.
