5 stars

Dr Jon Bowen’s talk at the Brighthelm Centre delved deep into the minds of these curious creatures, helping the audience see their feline companions in a whole new light. It was a refreshing mix of science, stories and insights that gave cat owners plenty to think about.

Dr Bowen, with decades of experience in animal behaviour, brought an easy charm and plenty of knowledge to the session. His warmth and obvious fondness for cats made it feel like you were chatting with a friend who happens to know everything about them. From the basics of what makes a cat happy to the unspoken rules they expect humans to follow, the talk covered a range of topics.

One of the standout moments was his exploration of why cats can be so contradictory. They’re experts at asking for affection yet seem to have a knack for rejecting it when it’s not exactly to their liking. Dr Bowen’s explanations about their sensitivities and instincts were eye-opening.

The talk also touched on the lives cats lead when they’re not at home. The answers, while not entirely surprising, gave an amusing glimpse into their fiercely independent and surprisingly social habits.

Another interesting section focused on how cats have learned to manipulate their human companions. From strategically timed meows to carefully placed nudges, it seems our furry friends have been training us all along. It’s humbling to realise you’ve been subtly outwitted by an animal that sleeps 16 hours a day.

The session wrapped up with a Q&A and it was clear from the thoughtful and varied questions that the audience was fully engaged. Dr Bowen’s responses were thorough but never dry, packed with relatable examples and plenty of humour.

For anyone interested in understanding their pet better, this talk was a goldmine of useful insights. Dr Bowen’s ability to translate years of clinical experience into accessible, entertaining advice made it a hit. Cats might always be a little mysterious, but after this talk, their quirks feel less puzzling and far more fascinating.
