Many Brighton residents gathered at the British Airways i360 this Sunday, 28th October to collect their litter grabbers and headphones for another silent disco beach clean! Families, friends and individuals alike who all care about our environment cleaned from West Pier to Palace Pier, getting in the Halloween spirit this spooky weekend as they listened to scary hits and wore costumes to pick up litter.

Pier 2 Pier Beach Clean and Brighton & Hove recycling and refuse try to organise one beach clean a month, encouraging people of all ages to contribute to preserving our beaches and reducing plastic waste in the ocean.

Sharing some scary facts about our environment, we were told: “each year 8 million tons of plastic are dumped into the ocean. Each year these plastics kill 1 million seabirds and 100,000 marine mammals.”

Organiser Amy thinks spreading awareness is “vital”

Getting into the Hallowclean spirit!

Amy told Brighton Journal that the beach cleans have been running in Brighton for about a year and a half and have a huge amount of support from local organisations such as Brighton & Hove city council, City Clean and Surfers Against Sewage.

“People around town are so keen to get involved, around 2000 people are interested at each Facebook event!” Amy also told us that the team run smaller events for local schools to get involved, so that younger people can learn the importance of sustainability.

The event  on Facebook shares the belief that “You can make a difference as an individual and together as a movement,” to encourage groups and individuals to get involved with the clean.

The marvellous beach cleans wouldn’t be possible without the many volunteers that help out on the day. Amy thanked her fabulous volunteer team that help “simply because they care about the issues”.

The wonderful volunteers help to hand out headphones and litter grabbers, collect the bags of rubbish at the end of the event, help other littler pickers and much more.

Kitted out with litter grabber and spider hat!

Brighton resident Gerda enjoyed the Halloween hits on the seafront as she cleaned up the beach around West Pier wearing her spooky spider hat to get into the spirit of the Hallowclean!

Friendly faces and fabulous face paint at the beach clean

Brighton Journal met Cassandra and Storm who headed out in their creative face-paint to clean the beach this Sunday. A fabulous example of mixed generations having fun whilst helping the environment to make a positive difference.

We spoke to Len who was enjoying the beach clean with Gerda as they enjoyed the music whilst litter picking.

A fabulous volunteer in a fabulous feather mask!

We met a wonderful volunteer, who loves being part of the beach cleans! She attended one last month as a litter picker, then decided to help out herself.

Despite the chances of rain, the sun shone over a chilly Brighton on Sunday morning, lighting the way for another beach clean success!
