Southern and Gatwick Express train drivers are adopting a system that helps them get extra support if they experience trauma on the job.

The scheme, called Trauma Risk Management, protects drivers if they experience distressing events like hitting someone with a train.

Staff will be trained to spot signs of trauma and point their colleagues towards help.

According to National Rail, 1 in 20 suicides in the UK take place on railways, meaning train drivers are at high risk of workplace trauma.

The system has been around since the 1990s, and was originally designed by the UK military to help prevent Post Traumatic Stress Disorder. The system has since been adopted by many organisations where employees risk distress at work, including the Emergency Services, The Foreign Office, and Security Services like MI5.
